In a recent feature with Startups MagazineUK, our CEO Shena Brien, shares her inspiring journey in the telecoms industry. From her early days as one of just five women in her Electronic Engineering course to leading IP Telecom as a successful and inclusive company, Shena’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and empowerment. As we celebrate Women’s Equality Day, we’re proud to reflect on her insights and the values that have driven our company’s growth, emphasizing the importance of diversity, strong leadership, and giving back to the community.
“As women, it can be easy to try to blend in with the crowd—especially in a sector like telecoms. But don’t shy away from what makes you stand out,” she says. In a field where innovation is key, customer service is crucial, and holistic thinking is invaluable, Shena emphasizes that a woman’s perspective is a strength, not a disadvantage.
IP Telecom’s journey from a kitchen table in 2010 to a thriving company with over 40 employees today is a story of growth driven by diversity and teamwork. Shena and her co-founder, Brian Chamberlain, have nurtured a company culture that values diversity, with a 50/50 gender split and team members from diverse backgrounds from different parts of the world.
For Shena, success is about more than just business growth. It’s also about giving back and supporting initiatives that empower other women, one example of this is IP Telecom's ongoing sponsorship of Peamount United's Women's Senior Team through 2025. Shena emphasizes that this partnership goes beyond mere sponsorship; it's a dedication to empowering women across various sectors - sports, business, technology, and beyond.
This Women’s Equality Day, we celebrate the achievements of women like Shena who continue to break barriers and inspire others to do the same. At IP Telecom, we’re committed to fostering an inclusive environment where diversity is not just welcomed but celebrated.
