When will Ireland fully switch to VoIP?

Modern Technology

The process of shutting down traditional phone networks is underway across Europe. It’s believed that by 2025 nearly all calls across the EU and UK will be via VoIP. There’s a major push in the UK currently underway – known as “the big switch off” – where new ISDN and PSTN lines are no longer available for both homes and businesses and the whole network, including Northern Ireland, is due to be switched to VoIP by 2025.

However, whilst networks have been slowly rolling out fibre connections across Ireland and improving connectivity, the switchover date to full VoIP for homes and businesses is yet to be announced. In this recent interview, Shena Brien, CEO of IP Telecom spoke to the Irish Examiner about what an Irish switchover may look like for both businesses and telecom providers in Ireland.
